  I think the better analogy is that the older generation is flying us all to New York from California, and the plane definitively doesn't have enough fuel for the whole flight. Instead of trying to find a safe place to land, they continue to fly in the direction of New York stubbornly, believing that the lack of fuel is a lie, a miracle will save us, an engineer on the plane will find a way to make the plane more fuel-efficient while we're still mid-flight, or that death will be fine because god will be nice to us in heaven. All while everyone else is screaming, trying to re-route the plane, and throwing small objects out of the plane to do our part to help it be lighter to have a 1% better chance of making it to New York.   Just imagine setting your boat on fire while your whole family is in it and then just abandon ship. That's what they have done. This is not just stuff that just appeared out of nowhere.   That doesn’t make any sense in the context of it being the 20s right now. It is the 20s. The 90s were 1990-1999, the 2000s were 2000 to 2009, the 2010s were 2010 to 2019. We are now in the decade of the 20s.   It doesn’t apply differently. The 21st century started in 2001. But the year 2000 is still the end of the 1900s the same way 1900 is the end of the 1800. We don’t talk about decades in terms of the consecutive numbers. We don’t call this the 202nd or whatever number decade. We called it the 20s.   Additionally, the whole “There is no year zero” argument is only relevant regarding decades if you’re trying to count how many decades it’s been since B.C. It makes no sense to say 1920 wasn’t part of the 1920s strictly because there was no year zero, even though it’s literally in the name. My thing is, why does that apply differently to centuries than it does decades? Both the person further up this thread and the xkcd comic seem to think that centuries are numbered differently to decades.
