 I just did some undergraduate research this summer for this problem!! Here’s what people in engineering are doing: Artificial Pancreas. The approach is to create a controller/policy that reads the patient’s blood glucose concentration with a glucose monitor; then it sends a signal to the patient’s subcutaneous pump to administer a certain amount of insulin based off of the sensor measurements. The difficulty is mostly due to the pumps’ ability to only control blood glucose in one direction: it can give insulin to lower BG, but it can’t take insulin away to raise it (often resulting in hypoglycemia). I’ve read a couple papers using glucagon (raises glucose) and insulin, but from what I recall, glucagon is difficult to implement because it doesn’t remain stable in the pumps for very long, meaning you’d have to change it out nightly.
