Using labels immediately conjures a conversation dynamic based on group identity, and kills off most any chance you had at having actual substantive discussions about ideas. If you say "I don't believe in a god" in some context where no one asked for that information, yeah that's going to conjure in people's minds the Atheist stereotype. However if people ask you, with genuine interest, what your religious views are, you can typically have a nice conversation. Again though, I wouldn't lead with "I don't believe in god", because that brings it into the whole identity context again, instead of being about ideas.
