I think even those who are abusive are often "doing the best they can," but its not an excuse, nor should it be dismissed, and children in these circumstances need extra love and attention throughout their life, and sometimes need to be taken away to a safer place. I think the only difference the realization of "doing the best they can" brings to the table is, it may help the child find compassion for themselves, and maybe for their parents, as theh grow older.
