 I assure you, all 460 of those people were in boarding group 4 for their flights, but raced to stand as close to the line as possible, with all their shit blocking people, when pre-boarding was announced. I used to wait until the absolute end, but if I'm taking a carry on only, sometimes there isn't enough room in the overhead bins (because of all the people putting jackets and things that could fit under the seats in front of them), forcing me to have my carry on checked. So I get in line when my actual boarding group is called now if it's a trip where I don't want to wait for my luggage to come out at baggage claim or have risk of being delayed or lost.
